GOTHIC ART IN THE ALPS

The exhibition has as its starting point one of the major masterpieces of international Gothic art, the splendid Cycle of the Months, painted around 1400 in one of the rooms in the Torre Aquila at the Castello del Buonconsiglio. Commissioned by the Bishop Prince of Trento, George of Liechtenstein, the frescoes are an ideal point of departure for an exhibition which intends tu illustrate, for the first time in such a systematic and geographically extensive form, the fascinating artistic culture which developed in the Alpine area in the l4th and l5th centuries.

Particular importance has been reserved for aspects concerning the patronage of Princes and some of large monastic orders established in the heart of the Alps, to the secular and knightly world and tu popular worship. The exhibition brings together exceptional paintings, detached frescoes, illuminated manuscripts, the goldsmith’s art, church ornaments, wooden altars (Flùgelaltàre) and sculptures depicting the Virgin, Saints the Pietà (Vesperbilder) coming from prestigious museums and ecclesiastical institutions in Italy and abroad. The Museo Diocesano Tridentino, where there is a very important nucleus of works commissioned according tu the refined taste of Bishop Liechtenstein, will house masterpieces of the goldsmith’s art and church ornaments, precious reliquary busts and articles in gold, silver and enamel, coming from old cathedral treasuries.

An itinerary covering the Trentino area will take visitors in search of the most important pictorial cycles and other artistic relics from the Gothic period, many of which have been recently found and restored.
